Cotswold Escarpment takes in a broad view across the Gloucestershire countryside, devoid of people, animals or buildings, just an extravagant sweep of timeless, pastoral landscape. The painting typifies the work of this successful Gloucestershire artist whose intimate relationship with and knowledge of the landscapes he paints is self-evident in this painting. Using quick, expressive strokes with a palette knife loaded with paint, Rupert builds up an apparently feverish surface of impasto paint. But take a step back and the wild surface arranges itself visually into a work of extraordinary perspicacity.
Rupert describes his approach to painting:
I try to find a way of expressing the wonder of nature and the landscape around me through the medium of oil paint on canvas. Nothing can replace being outside and experiencing the natural world in its raw state, but if I can at least capture the essence of it, I am happy. I hope to create an emotional response through my painting – whether it be a sense of peace and calm or drama and energy...’
When not painting en plein air, emersed in the scene before him, Rupert works in a studio across the Cotswolds from us, in Painswick, from where his much sought-after landscapes and townscapes are distributed across the country and abroad.
