This large painting, Garden Path at Home is clearly a personal response to the view from this esteemed artist's back door. Rapid brushstrokes depict an intimate view along a path towards a shed. The summer scene is intrinsically English, the garden punctuated with pots and and lit up by bright blooms catching the late sun.
Tom Coates is a highly acclaimed painter whose success, both here and abroad, is suggested by the various initials after his name (he was President of the RBA (Royal Society of British Artists), a member of the RWS and NEAC). But it is his paintings that truly speak of his excellence. He has a distinctively spontaneous approach to his work, whether portraiture or landscape, that gives them an urgency, a sense of life. Whether working in oils, pastels, or watercolours, he captures a moment in time, but with the passion of a painter rather than a lens.
Coate’s was born in 1941 and trained at the Bourneville College of Art, the Birmingham College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools under the influential Royal Academician Peter Greenham. President of the RBA, his work has been exhibited and sold internationally
