Betty’s painting, Hunter’s Moon, typifies her skill in capturing not just the geography, but the atmosphere of a landscape. Presumably painted in October, two thirds of the canvas is taken up with sky. Underpainted in a warm, coppery tone, she has applied later layers of oil paint with fine, gentle brushstrokes allowing the underpainting to glow through. The result is an highly detailed and refined image of great tranquillity, which reveals more every time you look.

Betty says of her art:
‘My paintings are mostly inspired by my love of the British landscape and in particular the subtle hues of autumn and winter. Mist-shrouded beaches and snow-clad fields and hillsides, mysterious forest and abandoned buildings in town or country, all hold a fascination for me. My northern upbringing and my ancestry in the Orkney Islands of Scotland are perhaps the reasons why I am drawn to the understated sublimity of these shores.’

Betty Harrison was born in Wigan, she started her art education in nearby St Helens, which she continued, many years later, gaining a degree at the University of Gloucestershire, where she was awarded the prestigious Summerfield Scholarship to study at the British School in Rome. She now paints in her studio in Cheltenham. Her degree show was a virtual sell out and she has exhibited in numerous galleries from London to Totnes; her works features in many private collections.
