Alexander Brown is a professional, local painter whose work is inspired by nature and natural events. In 2019 he explained, ‘I have developed an organic approach to composition and narrative which has recently fed into my paintings’. Alex's enduring fascination is painting from life, concentrating on colour relationship and abstraction.

Technically, Alex uses a variety of mediums and techniques, including brushes and palette knives. His Silver Teapot, Oranges is an example of this. The carefully structured still life is alive with light and colour; his use of oil paint, applied with broad brush strokes and a palette knife, is highly expressive, with areas of impasto paintwork (raised from the surface), creating a strong dynamism across the canvas.

Alex took his Foundation course at Manchester, his hometown, completing his degree at Camberwell School of Art, London in the 1980s. He has works in public and private collections in the UK and abroad, including London Transport Museum, Art for Hospitals, St. James’ Estate Trust and Glaxo SmithKline. In 2018, the John Moores University acquired five works for their Thomas Aquinas building.
