Cotswold Way 2 is built up with paint applied in broad, thick brushstrokes revealing in some areas underpainting, in others outlining in black pastel. Andrew's powerful use of colour – the main plain is a dynamic orange shot with red – implies a strong light and the physicality of the abstracted landscape, bisected by an angular path which darts towards the distant hills.
Inspired by landscapes, Andrew explains the intellectual process behind his paintings. He approaches a new canvas without preconceptions, almost cold, before laying down the compositional structure:
‘I seek to explore these compositions and develop abstraction through the inclusion and exclusion of the contents within view. Selecting elements, physical objects, colours, and surfaces, coupled with the linear pathways that the eye can follow in and around a space, is fundamental to the process of producing work.’
Andrew was born in Malta, but his training was more local, initially at Gloucester College of Art and Design, followed by Winchester School of Art and then the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design. For much of his career as well as painting he has taught art, but more recently he has devoted his time to his own art. He has exhibited extensively in and round his home-town Cheltenham.
