The large canvas, Looking South, is a semi-abstract painting by an acclaimed local artist, Caroline Chappell, which evokes a landscape she knows and loves. Rust coloured trees form a visual connection between the silver toned sky and the open fields, the scene apparently shimmering with light and warmth, contrasting with woodland on the horizon. Contemporary in its abstraction, the painting also retains a strong sense of an ancient landscape observed. Caroline has used broad brush strokes in a controlled and yet extremely expressive way to describe the topography and the impact of the sky on the landscape before her.

She explains the motivation behind her painting:

‘Our ancient landscape is the inspiration for my work. Walking in the tracks of our Neolithic ancestors on paths that traverse the countryside. I capture a sense of place by drawing and making notes. Back home in the studio I develop these ideas into paintings which reflect the experience of being there.'

Caroline builds up layers of mixed media, especially acrylic paint, using feathers as well as more conventional palette knives and brushes. In her own words, ‘each new painting is an exploration into unknown territory’. The result is memorable; she has had numerous exhibitions around the local area and her works are in collections as far afield as Canada, the US and Europe. She organises and tutors workshops on landscape painting.
