Purple Vase, painted in 2020, is an example of a decorative, floral painting that has, beyond its obvious beauty, enormous visual power. Strong colours, applied with loose brush strokes, have great expressive strength, from the flat application of purple on the vase, which has been scored into to create a wavy surface detail, to the wonderfully thick paint describing the flowers (fox gloves, anemones and spent tulips). The underside of the foliage is beautifully described, as is the bold darkness of the depth of the flowers in the purple vase. Interestingly, the overall image ‘breaks the frame’, giving an edgy, modern atmosphere to the work.
Christian works in many media but mainly oil paints. Living in Hampshire, she draws great creative inspiration from the ever-changing landscape that surrounds her. She works from a rural studio, which is part of a group of farm buildings, from where she also runs an art school called College Arts (currently offering on-line courses). Running this means that she is immersed in the conversations and work of other artists as well as inspirational teachers. The art school holds annual exhibitions in Hampshire and last year Christian exhibited at the Green and Stone Gallery in London SW3. Please click on this link for more information about Christian.
