Christine has created a series of sculptures of Brown Hares, here, Looking Down Hare. Christine's understanding of the animal's anatomy is evident, but typical of her highly expressive style, she leaves the unconscious making marks visible, working almost as a textural shorthand conveying the wild animals’ character and movement. Cast in iron resin, the intentional, rusty patination adds to the unpolished, power of the pieces which settle superbly into a natural setting.
Christine has a lovely early memory of digging clay out of a garden with her grandfather and modelling a dog. Subsequent experimental firing in the bonfire caused it to explode, but in her words, ‘she was hooked’. Now, a highly successful sculpture, she describes how as she sculpts, she thinks about ‘balance, gravity, volume and grace’ and hopes that the viewer of her work will experience ‘some of the love of beauty and grace that she understood whilst she was making the piece’.
Following a Foundation Course at Cambridge College of Art under the tutorage of Michael Gillespie (who was assistant to the remarkable Jacob Epstein). Christine then attended Camberwell School of Art. There she was trained, amongst other things, in bronze foundry casting and arc welding techniques, combining her studies with a History of Art degree. She then worked for 12 years in the toy and giftware industry until she was able to have a studio in Gloucestershire and undertake sculpture in her terms. She now lives and works in Monmouthshire.
