This enchanting open edition sculpture of the winged Greek Goddess, Nike, is by professional sculptor Christine Baxter

Christine is from a long line of artists, designers and craftsmen. Her work centres around figurative pieces, and she is inspired by the differing emotions they awake in the viewer.

Christine studied under the tutorage of respected bronze sculptor, craftsman and artist, the late Mike Gillespie, before graduating from the Camberwell School of Arts in the 1980s. Gillespie, largely remembered for his powerful abstract and figurative work, assisted 20th century bronze cast sculptors Jacob Epstein and Elizabeth Frink.

The sculpture is made from paper clay. The body is made by pressing the clay into a silicone mould, which is then air dried. The wings and smaller details are hand-built by Christine, and attached to the body. It is then biscuit fired in the kiln, and an iron oxide glaze is applied. It is then fired for a second and final time.
