New Day reveals Colin's fascination with the powerful combination of sea and light. Looking at this painting it is impossible to not recall Turner’s late works, but Colin paints in his own, very personal, contemporary style. The sun has risen out of the sea, burning off threatening clouds and creating an explosion of gold above purple waves. Despite the small scale of the painting, its impact is elemental, while at the same time encouraging hope and optimism.
Colin’s fascination with the sea is a thread running through many of his works, as here, and he explains this simply:
‘One of my first and most abiding, magical memories as a young boy is of seeing the sea for the first time as we drove over the brow of a hill on a day trip to the Sussex coast. The first sight of the vast sea was pure delight, and the sea has enchanted me ever since.’
After training at the Reigate School of Art and Design in Surrey, Colin spent forty or so years as a book and magazine illustrator. Later he studied English and History at the University of Oxford’s Kellogg College (Department of Continuing Education). He now devotes his time to painting and his works are in collections spread right across the world, from Europe, through the US to Australia and Japan.
