Santa Maria della Salute from the Lagoon is one of the most recognisable views of Venice, showing Longhena’s iconic, 17th century church, built in gratitude to God for deliverance from the plague. Colin has described the shadowy outline of the domed building against an almost eerie, pearly light, while visible across the lagoon, surrounding buildings and the tower of St Marks are bathed in a golden glow. With loose, expressive use of thickly applied paint, Colin has invested the scene with lighting and an atmospheric presence redolent of Turner.

Colin’s fascination with the sea and in this case large bodies of water, is a thread running through many of his works and he explains this simply:

‘One of my first and most abiding, magical memories as a young boy is of seeing the sea for the first time as we drove over the brow of a hill on a day trip to the Sussex coast. The first sight of the vast sea was pure delight, and the sea has enchanted me ever since.’

After training at the Reigate School of Art and Design in Surrey, Colin spent forty or so years as a book and magazine illustrator. Later he studied English and History at the University of Oxford’s Kellogg College (Department of Continuing Education). He now devotes his time to painting and his works are in collections spread right across the world, from Europe, through the US to Australia and Japan.
