Solitude reveals Colin's continual fascination with the powerful combination of landscape and light. Abstracted, the dark, textured landscape appears to be consuming the sun as it sets, or is it a wildly storm sea with white churning waves in the foreground? It is probably not crucial to know. Whatever story it is telling, the impact of the work feels elemental and the title hints at the psychological depths explored by the painter. The result is extremely beautiful and thought provoking.
Colin’s fascination with the sea is a thread running through many of his works, as here, and he explains this simply:
‘One of my first and most abiding, magical memories as a young boy is of seeing the sea for the first time as we drove over the brow of a hill on a day trip to the Sussex coast. The first sight of the vast sea was pure delight, and the sea has enchanted me ever since.’
After training at the Reigate School of Art and Design in Surrey, Colin spent forty or so years as a book and magazine illustrator. Later he studied English and History at the University of Oxford’s Kellogg College (Department of Continuing Education). He now devotes his time to painting and his works are in collections spread right across the world, from Europe, through the US to Australia and Japan.
