Colin’s passion for the sea is evident in his art. Sun, Sea Sand and Sky is his response to an elemental seascape, in which the sun, a cold, almost silvery orb, is breaking through storm clouds in an almost pearly sky, which takes up more than two thirds of the painting. The effect is particularly powerful because the drama of the sky is reflected either in the wet sand or maybe the sea itself, painted below. The impact of Turner’s late works is evident in the almost apocalyptic nature of the painted scene.
Colin’s fascination with the sea is a thread running through many of his works, as here, and he explains this simply:
‘One of my first and most abiding, magical memories as a young boy is of seeing the sea for the first time as we drove over the brow of a hill on a day trip to the Sussex coast. The first sight of the vast sea was pure delight, and the sea has enchanted me ever since.’
After training at the Reigate School of Art and Design in Surrey, Colin spent forty or so years as a book and magazine illustrator. Later he studied English and History at the University of Oxford’s Kellogg College (Department of Continuing Education). He now devotes his time to painting and his works are in collections spread right across the world, from Europe, through the US to Australia and Japan.
