Autumn up the Avenue is an expressive evocation of the subtle colours created by first light hitting autumnal trees in a woodland, some illuminated, some still in deep shadow. Jane has thickly layered paint on the canvas with a palette knife but also used brushes loaded with paint. Tree trunks are defined with impasto streaks and the surface is scored. Through the trees the low light hits buildings in the woods, turning them to gold.
Jane explains that she started painting ‘as a distraction from the stresses of a busy life as a full time GP… Painting has been life changing and has altered the way I see the world, looking at light and skies in a way I have never done before’. Very quickly Jane became immersed in painting. She describes her style as semi abstract, and her love of colour is reflected in her adoption of a strong palette. Her subject choice ranges from still life to landscapes and seascapes, particularly inspired by her travels.
Initially self-taught, she received some formal tuition and now successfully exhibits locally in the Cotswolds.
