Jane explains, ‘I must never tire from looking, observing and learning’. Her powerful style – dynamic and full of movement – reflects this promise to herself; it appears as if she sculpts while keeping one eye on the model. All her pieces, small or large, reveal how she expressively handles the clay (before casting) with her fingers, as if painting with a broad brush.

Jane Shaw's Galloping Horse Series I II III recalls the ground-breaking 1878 photographs of Edweard Muybridge, the first person to analyse the correct motion of a horse through the lens of a camera. While following the correct science, the anatomy is perfect, Jane typically also introduces an extraordinarily powerful expressiveness to her work. The result is a sculpture full of speed, power and beauty.

Jane Shaw grew up in Gloucestershire and learnt to sculpt from an inspirational teacher. She read History of Art at Manchester University before working as a Fine Art Consultant, later setting up a recruitment company. In 2013, her passion for sculpture, combined with her love of wildlife became overwhelming and she concentrated on creating sculptures of animals. She exhibits and sells her work nationally and has a permanent display in the garden of her studio in Dorset.

More of this talented, self-taught sculptor's works are on display in our lovely Burford Art Gallery.
