Jane Shaw's War Horse is a work of extraordinary candour and emotion. Whether referring to the Irish Bay in Michael Morpogo's remarkable book, or to the age old concept of the loyalty of an animal that goes into battle with you, is a matter for speculation, but the work, as ever with Jane, is profoundly observed. This is a powerful, if compact portrait of a sentient creature, ears back, eyes alert above its Roman nose, ready for whatever it must face.

Jane explains her approach: ‘I must never tire from looking, observing and learning’. Her powerful style – dynamic and full of movement – reflects this promise to herself; it appears as if she sculpts while keeping one eye on the model. All her pieces, small or large, reveal how she expressively handles the clay (before casting) with her fingers, as if painting with a broad brush.

Jane grew up in Gloucestershire and learnt to sculpt from an inspirational teacher. She read History of Art at Manchester University before working as a Fine Art Consultant, later setting up a recruitment company. In 2013, her passion for sculpture, combined with her love for wildlife became overwhelming and she concentrated on creating sculptures of animals. She exhibits and sells her work nationally and has a permanent display in the garden of her studio in Dorset.

More of this talented, self-taught sculptor's works are on display in our lovely Burford Art Gallery.
