Jane’s profound appreciation of cities is apparent in this vibrant view of Chester’s famous Eastgate Street, crowned with its Victorian clock, which marks the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress. Using a strong perspective, our eyes are carried along the street and under the bridge, passing brightly coloured or red-brick buildings in a street scattered with elongated figures. For the viewer, the visual progress is rhythmic and fast paced, creating a scene full of energy and life. Incidentally, as only happens in cities, the rain comes down, depicted using striations in the thickly applied paint.
Jane Vaux is an artist who works on a large scale, producing expansive canvases that explore her areas of interest: seascapes, landscapes and more recently cityscapes. Some of her work is realistic in style; some moves towards a more abstract freestyle. Mainly working in acrylic paint (although she does work in pastels and charcoal) the surfaces of her canvases have an expressive texture, built up by layers of thick paint with vertical striations. These are juxtaposed with patches where that weave of the canvas showing through also makes a statement. The controlled us of strong colour is a powerful component, as is light which seems to shine out of her work.
Jane holds art workshops, teaches and exhibits extensively both in Devon and Oxfordshire.
