Jane’s painting is both powerfully expressive with a dynamic surface texture. Using loose, strong brushstrokes and a palette knife loaded with brilliant paint, she captures a panorama of undulating Cotswold landscape as it is hit simultaneously by sunshine and showers. Tucked into the hills is a typical Cotswold village, its ancient, manmade church spire slicing through the natural scenery. The effect is magnificent and elemental, the large canvas alive with vivid rain-washed, sun-lit colours ranging from acid yellow to navy blue, high lit with strokes of pastel.
Jane Vaux is an artist who works on a large scale, producing expansive canvases that explore her areas of interest: seascapes, landscapes and more recently cityscapes. Some of her work is realistic in style; some moves towards a more abstract freestyle. Mainly working in acrylic paint (although she does work in pastels and charcoal) the surfaces of her canvases have an expressive texture, built up by layers of thick paint with vertical striations. These are juxtaposed with patches where that weave of the canvas showing through also makes a statement. The controlled us of strong colour is a powerful component, as is light which seems to shine out of her work.
Jane holds art workshops, teaches and exhibits extensively both in Devon and Oxfordshire.
