Seemingly effortlessly, Jane manages to encapsulate the feeling of sunlight, and wind blowing across the shoreline in this large canvas. Using loose, strong brushstrokes, loaded with paint, she evocates the recessive view of the beach looking towards the sea and perfectly describes the ozone filled light and its reflection on the wet sand. Walking along the shore is, almost sculptural in form, a couple, while nearby children play in the sand and a dog sniffs around in the distance. This is a perfect scene.
Jane Vaux is an artist who works on a large scale, producing expansive canvases that explore her areas of interest: seascapes, landscapes and more recently cityscapes. Some of her work is realistic in style; some moves towards a more abstract freestyle. Mainly working in acrylic paint (although she does work in pastels and charcoal) the surfaces of her canvases have an expressive texture, built up by layers of thick paint with vertical striations. These are juxtaposed with patches where that weave of the canvas showing through also makes a statement. The controlled us of strong colour is a powerful component, as is light which seems to shine out of her work.
Jane holds art workshops, teaches and exhibits extensively both in Devon and Oxfordshire.
