Cool and elegantly measured, The Window Sill is a carefully observed study of vessels and the integrity of their spatial progression. The placing of the objects, their interplay one with another, creates a calming pattern of forms, their three-dimensionality defined by ellipses rather than shading.

Marie has an intention: ‘Each picture should become a visual poem’. She draws upon influences as eclectic as the Japanese Wabi Sabi philosophy that there is beauty in imperfection, and the observational approach of such painters as Cézanne and Morandi.

‘My inspiration comes from things observed... I am interested in the evolving relationship between shapes, colour and texture ... I enjoy playing with the compositional and material elements of a painting until they resolve themselves in ways that are difficult to predict. ‘‘

Marie was born in France and studied graphic design at L’Ecole Supérieure des Arts Modernes in Paris. She grew up in a house full of archaeological artefacts (her father is a collector) and developed a taste for what is sometimes called ‘primitive art’. This is reflected in her painting. She worked in advertising before moving to Oxford where she took up painting and studied under the tuition of Prue Pardue RA and developed strong links with St Ives School of art. She has exhibited extensively in and around Oxford and further afield.
