It’s That Dress seems to draw so much from classical sculptural statues, the formal, forward-facing stance and the fragmented upper limbs, recall ancient statuary unearthed from the ground in Greece or Rome. But the rendition of the dress itself is extremely contemporary, not a mass of Hellenistic folds but one elegant, clean-cut drape. The figure beneath is sensual and at the same time monumental.
Extraordinarily tactile, this beautiful sculpture is carved from Ancaster Weatherbed Limestone, one of the hardest stones in England, typically two-coloured and filled with tiny shell fossils. The entire sculpture is highly polished and stands on a bevelled plinth cut from similar stone.
A full-time stone sculptor in the Cotswolds, continuing the skills, traditions and origins of stone sculpture, Martin Cash uses predominantly British stone to carve one-off pieces. Nothing matches the durability, feel, elegance and exclusivity of unique stone sculpture.
More of this talented, self-taught sculptor's works are on display in our lovely Burford Art Gallery.
