Sentinel is carved in semi-relief (the depth of the stone no more than 8cm) from a large slab of Portland stone from the Jurassic coast. Highly allegorical, Martin’s carving of the guardian or watchman, suggested by the title, is full of movement, waves of stone around an all-seeing eye; the pupil of the eye in the centre of the sculpture, pierces the stone, creating a descriptive void. The reverse of Sentinel is flat, to stand against a wall or hedge perhaps, but beautifully incised into the its surface in classical, serif capital letters are the title and Martin’s initials. The overall effect is fluid and powerful, typical of this sculptor's highly tactile work.

A full-time stone sculptor in the Cotswolds, continuing the skills, traditions and origins of stonemasonry, Martin uses predominantly British stone, as here, to carve one-off pieces. Martin resists making copies of his work in other media, preferring that each sculpture is a unique artwork that will become an heirloom that will last for generations.
