During the winter of 2021 Martin started carving a figurative sculpture, he called it Steward of the Land. In his words he wanted ‘to celebrate those exercising a guardianship of the land… to acknowledge the work of landowners, farmers, foresters, growers, and gardeners'. After three weeks he realised he needed to add boots to the figure as a cogent way ‘to symbolise a worker on the land’.

Initially the Steward was leaning with an elbow on a post, as if communicating with another person, but the post evolved into a bench, large enough to allow a person to sit down next to the figure, encouraging the observer not just to look, but ‘to engage senses, body and mind’.

This gently polished, highly tactile sculpture is carved from Ancaster Weatherbed Limestone, quarried in Lincolnshire, one of the hardest stones in England, typically bi- or tri-coloured and filled with minute shell fossils.

A full-time stone sculptor in the Cotswolds, continuing the skills, traditions and origins of stonemasonry, Martin uses predominantly British stone, as here, to carve one-off pieces. Martin resists making copies of his work in other media, preferring that each sculpture is a unique artwork that will become an heirloom that will last for generations.
