With Garden Seat, Nigel takes an intimate scene of a private garden with a brick façade behind and describes it with apparent joy. Using broad strokes of colour accompanied by lightly outlined decorative detail - the curlicue ironwork of the bench, the texture of the foliage – he builds up a garden scene of happy domesticity.

Nigel’s approach is invariably a reaction to the world around him, his smaller works, like this, are painted in situ, providing an immediate response to his environment. In his words, ‘the sound of the wind in the trees, the sound of birdsong – anything that touches the senses will influence the marks on paper.’

Nigel Fletcher was born in the Cotswolds but now lives a little further away on a small farm in North Oxfordshire, where he works from his studio. Over twenty years ago he gave up a career in illustration to paint full time. He explains that his style has been predominantly figurative until the last few years when, influenced by the Abstract Expressionist painting in New York in the 1950s (de Koning, Pollock, Rothko to name a few), he began experimenting with pure and semi-abstract painting; this development has been well received, leading to several successful shows.
