In Canyon, Penelope’s virtuoso style in pastels displays a lightness of touch associated with the medium, but with an expressive use of colour and textural surface that is normally more typical of oil painting. Clearly a foreign scene, sunlight seeps through the view, dappling the trees and casting strong shadows. Typical of her composition, a strong sense of recession draws the viewer along a path towards the distant rocks of the canyon.
Born in 1942 in Buckinghamshire, Penelope studied Fine Art at Portsmouth College of Art where she specialised in drawing and sculpture, continuing her art studies in Rome and Florence. She has spent most of her life living abroad, particularly around the Mediterranean. Internationally collected for her miniature, surreal and wildlife paintings, she is currently working on larger and much freer oil paintings and pastels, concentrating on places that particularly catch her imagination. A particular facet of her work is a sense of mysticism she adds to the physical scenes before her.
