Penelope has found the perfect Walnut Tree Picnic Place and transported the warm, shimmering atmosphere to the canvas. Dappled with sunlight, the forms of the terrain, trees and tree trunks are seen in a Post impressionistic manner and described in loose brushstrokes – aspects which recall Cézanne’s landscapes. Here there is dappled light juxtaposed with deeply shaded areas, who knows exactly where it is, probably southern Europe, but wherever it is, it is an enchanted place.
Born in 1942 in Buckinghamshire, Penelope studied Fine Art at Portsmouth College of Art where she specialised in drawing and sculpture, continuing her art studies in Rome and Florence. She has spent most of her life living abroad, particularly around the Mediterranean. Internationally collected for her miniature, surreal and wildlife paintings, she is currently working on larger and much freer oil paintings and pastels, concentrating on places that particularly catch her imagination. A particular facet of her work is a sense of mysticism she adds to the physical scenes before her.
