Plum’s cerebral approach to the process of painting is summed up in her own words:

‘My work is often based on an experience of place and its resolution evolves through a combination of intention, intuition and improvisation. It is trying to reveal something new about a subject as well as capturing its essence'.

Plum successfully fulfils her in intentions in Floribunda: Not Quite Summer. In this semi-abstract work, she has revisited the traditional vase of flowers and placed it according to strong proportional and geometrical strictures within the picture plain. Then there is an explosion of colour! The vase and the flowers bleed off the edges of the painting, creating a sense of tension, not normally felt in a floral still life. As ever in her work, the texture is important. A mixture of oil paint, cold wax pigment and collage is carefully built up, creating an expressive surface affected by light, particularly evident in the almost empty quadrant of the painting, a white plain broken only by what are, perhaps, dropping petals. The effect is beautiful and powerful.

Plum studied at the University of Gloucestershire for five years, gaining a Distinction for the Foundation Course and a BA in Fine Art, and she won the prestigious Grant Thornton Travel award. She has worked as a painter for many years since graduating, and her work has been highly acclaimed and extensively exhibited in Britain (the RA Summer Exhibition on various occasions), and abroad. Her paintings are in collections all round the world. Plum lives and works in Cheltenham and practises Nichiren Buddhism.
