Plum’s cerebral approach to the process of painting is summed up in her own words:
‘My work is often based on an experience of place and its resolution evolves through a combination of intention, intuition and improvisation. It is trying to reveal something new about a subject as well as capturing its essence'.
Plum follows these ideals in her semi-abstract painting Floribunda: They Just Bloom. Against a wonderfully textured aqua ground and taupe backdrop, scoured through with angular lines, she has painted a vase of bright pink floribunda, giving them a sense of stylised presence normally reserved for flowers in Japanese block prints. Typical of Plum’s painting, the glorious floral explosion of textured colour, punctuated with gold leaf, breaks the frame to great effect.
Plum studied at the University of Gloucestershire for five years, gaining a Distinction for the Foundation Course and a BA in Fine Art, and she won the prestigious Grant Thornton Travel award. She has worked as a painter for many years since graduating, and her work has been highly acclaimed and extensively exhibited in Britain (the RA Summer Exhibition on various occasions), and abroad. Her paintings are in collections all round the world. Plum lives and works in Cheltenham and practises Nichiren Buddhist.
