Raymond describes his intentions: ‘My aim is to create atmosphere and distil memories and ideas of place, with a strong emphasis on design, colour, ambiguous shapes, and spaces’.
Resembling an assemblage of Venetian iconography, Raymond’s Murano Reflections reveals an intimate, almost secretive view of Venice. Showing glimpses of an arched bridge over a canal, a trio of decorated gothic windows and the lion of St Mark, the view, with its brooding sky, is abstracted by blocks of colour and light. The outside world is seen through items of Murano glassware: powerfully repeated forms of vases, a translucent bottle refracting the light and a thin-stemmed glass. The work is an expert study both in still life and subtly depicted atmosphere.
Inspired by his visits to Italy, as well as France, Spain and the British landscape, Raymond’s paintings respond to his immediate environment, encompassing interiors, still life and landscape. Born in Hamsworth, Yorkshire he studied at Wakefield College of Art. During a long career as a painter, he has shown widely, such prestigious exhibitions as the Royal Academy, New English Art Club, Royal Watercolour Society and Royal Institute of Oil Painters to name a few. He now has work in many private and corporate collections here and abroad.
