‘It has been a full, far flung, and satisfactory day; dusk falls, and we say good-bye. Back down the lane in the thick hot darkness we walk drowsily, heavy with boots. Night odours come drifting from woods and gardens; sweet musks and sharp green acids. In the sky the fat stars bounce up and down, rhythmically, as we trudge along. Glow-worms, brighter than lamps or candles, spike the fields with their lemon fires, while huge horned beetles stumble out of the dark and buzz blindly around our heads. Painswick appears - a starfish of light dilating in a pool of distance.'

2019 is the 60th anniversary of the publication of Laurie Lee’s Cotswold literary classic, Cider with Rosie. Rupert Aker is a landscape artist based on the edge of the Slad valley where Laurie Lee's autobiographical book is set, and has his studio in Painswick. For his autumn collection in the Burford Art Gallery, Rupert has taken inspiration from the places in this corner of the Cotswolds so evocatively described in Laurie Lee’s poetic prose, and his paintings are accompanied by those particular excerpts.

Rupert Aker works quickly with oil paint and palette knives to capture the fleeting effects of the light on the land.

For more information, take a look at Rupert's biography at Burford Jottings. More of this talented artist's works are on display in our lovely Burford Art Gallery.
