The Slad Valley has become synonymous with the Cotswolds, familiar to many people who have read Laurie Lee’s Cider with Rosie, where it was set. Rupert Aker sees it anew, through contemporary eyes, but his love of it is no less profound, growing from a proper, in-depth knowledge of every fold of the valley or sweep of the meadows. Bathed in sunshine and fresh air, Rupert describes a view right across the valley – with its green, sheep-speckled pastures, defined by shadowy hedges – towards distant blue hills. The effect is a almost bracing, life-enhancing.
Rupert Aker RA is a Cotswold landscape painter based in a studio at Painswick, although he paints en plein air whenever possible. Gaining inspiration from his walks through local woods, meadows and hedgerows, he aims to capture the effects of the light on the land using oil paint and a palette knife, trying to find a way to express nature and the landscape around him.
