One or two Sitapur Mattresses would be perfect for a bench or lazing on the grass on a warm summer's day. Available in four soft colours, they are printed in a design that nods to the Mogul botanical tradition and the work of William Morris, but with a blast of fresh air from the Himalayas. Weaving across the surface of the matresses is a riot of stylised clematis, chrysanthemums and cinquefoil, accompanied by elegant, but delightfully disassociated foliage in singing colours. The printing and wood blocks for this wonderfully airy floral design have all been created by hand.
The pattern is so-called for a good reason. To the North of India in Uttar Pradesh is the city of Sitapur. Named after Lord Rama’s wife Sita, it is an important centre of Hindu pilgrimage and is also associated with the ancient Sanskrit epic poem Mahabharata. During the 17th and 18th centuries, however, its textile industry flourished and its materials were widely exported.
