The artist Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro is one of the most influential figures in nineteenth century Portugal, respected for his satirical commentary and artistic creation. Since the establishment of his factory in 1884, the bold (either in size or delicacy of detail) ceramics have gained a reputation for artistic quality, quirky exuberance and technical merit.
