notes

Depicted from an aerial view are a group of shells intricately placed on the sand. Executed in oils, Johnston studies their detail down to the finest minutiae of their colours, patterns, and structural forms.

Insights

Henrietta is inspired by the scope of still life - an art form steeped in history - whether analysing a single object, an apparently simple bowl of fruit or a more complex arrangement. Her highly finished work is classical in approach, decidedly realistic, and always pervades a sense of calm. She seals her work with a matt varnish consciously promoting a contemporary feel.

Artist

Henrietta studied History of Art at university and her love of the subject led her to become an artist. She concentrated on figure drawing at art school in Florence before training at the Atelier Canova in Rome where she realised oil paints were her medium. She now works as a professional artist in North Oxford
