In ‘Lemons and Apricots with Colourful Ceramics, a richly decorated serving dish emerges from an intriguing dark, blank background, their position defined by reflection and the fall of light on the contrasting chest. Especially noticeable is the juxtaposition of texture, the shiny ceramic glazes harmonising with the beautifully defined surface of the fruit.

Diane Urwin has won various awards for her watercolours, but she approaches her still life compositions in acrylic paint, painstakingly applied in multiple layers to achieve a highly realistic and polished finish reminiscent of that achieved by the European Old Masters.

Urwin’s creativity started at an early age, inherited from her father. She studied Dress Design at Nottingham Art College before becoming a professionally qualified artist - her illustrations in numerous publications. She has subsequently concentrated on painting still life’s as shown here. Urwin has won prestigious awards and is an active member of the Society of Women’s Artists.
