Still Life Poppies
Joan Warburton’s 1985 pastel, Still Life Poppies, captures the vitality of summer blooms with elegant immediacy. Rendered in soft, luminous pastels, the composition features coral and crimson poppies arranged in a simple vase, their stems arching with a naturalistic ease. The background—a sunlit window framed by patterned drapery—adds warmth and a sense of domestic intimacy. This piece would suit a bright kitchen, garden room, or any space that celebrates the quiet joy of seasonal flowers.

Joan Warburton (1920–1996) was a British painter known for her still life and landscape works. Born in Edinburgh and raised near Colchester, she studied at the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing under Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines. Her time at Benton End, the school's location, deeply influenced her artistic focus on horticultural subjects. During World War II, Warburton served in the Women's Royal Naval Service, worked in an arms factory, and volunteered with the Red Cross Ambulance Service. She exhibited at venues including the Royal Academy and the Women's International Art Club, and her work is held in public collections such as those in Derby, Hull, and Rugby.
