Upon visiting a National Trust place, a striking variety of vintage tools in a workshop captured the artists attention who quickly became fascinated by their patinated yet polished finish and structure. Transferring this excitement back to her studio, Berman commenced creating an engrossing series of steel sculptures that pay a rich testament to this inspiration, each of which also closely resembles card patterns.

Two essentials running through the artist’s work is the juxtaposition between the sculpture and the viewer. How an individual responds - whether with curiosity, amusement, puzzlement - contributes to the overall impact of Berman’s pieces; reactions of any nature, Berman believes, are vital to her artistic practice.

“Working with my hands and using tools are fundamental to who I am”, Berman writes. Adopting a wide range of materials, from cement, clay, non-toxic resins to found objects, metals, and papier mache, Berman frequently threads elements of metamorphosis into her work; celebrating the processes of the ‘in between.’
