Oxfordshire Artweeks

As part of Oxfordshire Artweeks, the city’s largest arts festival, our Burford Gallery is hosting a select number of our artists across the week, from Monday 6th May. We are delighted to be joined by four of our artists throughout the week, demonstrating how they bring their impressive pieces to life, whilst shedding light upon their practice and answering any questions you may have about their work.

On Sunday 12th May join us in store to meet artist, Rupert Aker between 11am and 3:30pm who will be demonstrating oil landscape painting on canvas using palette knives, producing brand new dynamic and dramatic pieces.

Meet Rupert Aker

Rupert Aker is a landscape painter based in Painswick, Gloucestershire. Inspired by the breathtaking beauty of the natural environment, Aker seeks to translate its awe-inspiring essence onto canvas using considered strokes of paint. In doing so, the artist endeavours to evoke a range of emotions, from a serene sense of tranquillity, to the electrifying energy of a dramatic landscape. Using oil paints and palette knives to create impressionist-style paintings, Aker works directly from nature wherever and whenever possible, specifically during his walks through Cotswold towns and landscapes. Larger paintings are then finished off in his studio, cleverly coined ‘The Loovre’ due to the location being a conversion of an old public toilet.

I walk the valleys and hills, drawing my inspiration from the woods, meadows and hedgerows, painting 'en plain air' when possible. My aim is to capture the effects of the light on the land through the medium of oil paint with a palette knife.

Rupert Aker

A self-taught artist, Aker’s love and understanding of the countryside was borne from living and working alongside farmers and foresters, closely followed by studying Land Management at the Royal Agricultural University. His aim is to hold regular pop-up exhibitions in locations throughout the Cotswolds, presenting his art in the landscape that inspired them. Often selling paintings straight off the easel, Aker thrives off the notion of people purchasing freshly produced works of art as they would buy a freshly cut bouquet of flowers.
