Features

notes
Unusually, dwarf Clematis Filigree has a trailing rather than a climbing habit, so rather than growing it up a support or through other plants, it is lovely in a container or hanging basket, or can be planted in the front of the border for luxuriant ground cover. The open, semi-double flowers have mauve petals with attractively ruffled edges.
Insights

Large flowered clematis were introduced from the Orient in the 19th century, but Old Man’s Beard (Clematis vitalba) commonly seen in British hedgerows, is an indigenous relation.

Details

Flowers: June - August

Planting
  • Moist, well drained
  • Container
  • Hanging baskets
  • Full sun, partial shade
  • South, east, west facing
Care

As Clematis like cool roots, try to position so that the roots will be shaded from the sun by another plant. Bear in mind the space they will need to climb and provide a suitable structure - trellis, wall, fence or other plant - to climb through. In late winter cut the stems back to 30cm.
