Small, semi-evergreen leaves cover this energetic Solanum Glasnevin or Chilean Potato Vine. From early July right through to the autumn the vine-like climber is covered with deep lilac flowers with bright orange eyes. These mature into small, pale yellow, inedible but attractive fruits. It is perfect for covering a wall or fence and good at the back of a sunny border.

Insights
Solanum, obvious from the tell-tale flowers, is a member of the potato family alongside tomatoes and aubergine, and a native of Chile and Peru. This particular variety - robust and strongly coloured - was discovered by chance in the 19th century in the then Royal (now National) Botanic Gardens at Glasnevin, Dublin, known for its dramatic glass houses. A recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence in the garden.

Care
Due to the eventual height of this climber, ensure that there is support, either wires across a wall, a trellis or other plants to crawl through; it will need to be tied in. Ensure, if it is in a rain shadow near a wall, that it is well watered while it establishes itself.
