notes
Bringing together the voices of those that witnessed the collapse of the Soviet Union, the latest work by Nobel Laurate, Svetlana Alexievich is a formidable attempt to chart the disappearance of a culture and to surmise what new kind of world may emerge from the rubble. This rich symphony of Russian voices serves as a magnificent requiem to a once great civilization now left in ruins.
Insights

Born in Ivano-Frankovsk in 1948, Svetlana Alexievich spent most of her life in the Soviet Union and present-day Belarus, along with prolonged periods of exile in Western Europe. Starting her writing career as a journalist, she soon developed her distinct style of non-fiction, bringing together a chorus of voices to describe a specific historical moment. Svetlana Alexievich and her work have received numerous accolades, and in 2015 she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Bela Shayevich is a Soviet-American artist and translator.
