notes
One of the joys of spring is the unfurling of fern shoots and the Copper Shield Fern, Dryopteris erythrorosa, is exemplary. The young shoots (croziers) unspiral from the central growing rosette, opening into large, elegant fronds, arranged to form a giant shuttlecock. Lacy and elegant, these ferns are coppery in shade when young then become a lush green.
Insights

Ferns are amongst the most ancient living organisms, their origins dating back hundreds of millions of years, with fossils revealing how little they have evolved. Widespread across the earth, this slightly more recent variety is indigenous to the Far East.

Details

Ferns are sporophytes and reproduce asexually, either by cloning themselves or scattering spores or ‘sori’.

Planting
  • Moist, well drained soil
  • Any aspect
  • Shade or partial sun
  • Sheltered
  • Container
Care

Ferns require little attention, remove dead leaves as necessary, but do so after the winter because they protect the plant from the cold. They can be planted in full sun and in containers if you are prepared to water well during the summer months.
