notes

Kniphofia Red Hot Popsicle shimmers with hot colour, and creates a brilliant staccato punctuation as part of a Prairie Planting scheme or striking in a border amongst shades of blue and purple. With a mound of slender foliage and large flower heads raised on strong stalks, this variety is also suitable for containers and happily attracts native pollinators.

Insights

Hard to pronounce Kniphofia (‘nif-of-e-a’), is one of the first flowers many children recognise, but by its common name - Red Hot Poker. A distant relation of the giant plant named after the late eighteenth-century German botanist Johan Kniphof, this variety evokes the heat and drama of its native South Africa.

Details

The distinctive flower heads appear from March to November.

Planting
  • Well drained, fertile, moist soil
  • South or west facing
  • Full sun
Care

Dead head as the flowers fade. Leave foliage in place throughout winter to protect from heavy frost. Tidy foliage in mid-spring and check for slugs and snails.
