notes
The recently bred fern, Dryopteris wallachii Jurassic Gold, produces spring croziers that unfurl into the most surprising young foliage in rich shades of gold and orange. As these fronds grow they mature a fresh light green colour. This unusual fern brings light and colour to a dark corner or shady border and looks spectacular in a carefully placed container.
Insights

The fern was named after Nathaniel Wallich (b. 1786), a surgeon and botanist of Danish extraction, whose work impacted many European plant collections. This exciting new variety was bred by Bob Hollister in 2018 at a nursery based on the Jurassic coastline in Dorset.

Details

Ferns are particularly ancient and do not reproduce using flowers but through a system of spores which develop on the underside of the fronds

Planting

Care

Fern fronds will die down in autumn, so it is a good idea to leave them in situ to protect the plant from harsh winter weather. In the spring once the worst frosts are over cut back to reveal young croziers
