notes
In Seeking Solace, Martin has fulfilled the sculptural ideal that the subject of the work is being released from the stone. Compact, cuboid in form, presumably reflecting the shape of the block he was carved from, the man is at once anatomically strong but at the same time tender; his feet are crossed, his arms wrapped comfortingly around his own body. The sculpture is an affecting reflection of the human condition – different from every angle.
Insights

Geologically, much of the Cotswolds is formed of Oolite limestone; Martin has carved Seeking Solace from a similar but cooler-toned Lincolnshire stone called Clipsham Limestone. Striking in the sun against a backdrop of foliage, Clipsham is also compelling in subdued winter tones provided by mist or frost.

Artist

A full-time stone sculptor in the Cotswolds, continuing the skills, traditions and origins of stonemasonry, Martin Cash predominantly works with British stone. Cash resists making copies of his work in other media, preferring that each sculpture is a unique artwork that will become an heirloom, lasting for generations to come.
