notes

‘Wirelia’ depicts a little girl, woven from considered layers of wire. Unlike the artist’s other sculptures of the human form, this piece feels vaguer in its construction, adding to its fragility. Due to the innocent persona of the young figure, one gauges that these intricate metal threads represent her forthcoming growth into maturity; as the years go by, she will mould herself into form.

Insights

Using pliers and side cutters, Aplin entirely hand-constructs each of her sculptures without the use of gloves, in order to achieve the precision and definition that brings each of her pieces to life. By closely studying the scale, muscle tone, movement, and the individual characteristics, Aplin builds up layers of wire that lends the artwork its unique personality.

Artist

Since 2017, Aplin has been utilising the impressive technique of hand-assembling wire sculptures. Working in the U.K. and New Zealand as a registered nurse, her “Chicken Wire Creations” led to a complete change in vocation and lifestyle, going on to exhibit in several art galleries in New Zealand.
