notes
Moulded from clay and embellished with an abundance of drawings, ‘Storm’ depicts a claustrophobic, intense Noah’s ark scene of animals facing swells of an aggressive sea. The traditional animals one would associate with the original story are mixed with a range of Disney characters bearing frightened expressions; from Mickey Mouse to Pinocchio, adding a twist of satire and childhood nostalgia to this biblical tale. To finish, a miniature rubber duck is spotted floating innocently amongst the sea laps, evoking a sense of charm and humour in amongst the composition’s dramatism.
Insights

Sculptor Gary Betts' inspiration stems from the ‘perfect imperfection’. The result is an extraordinarily varied oeuvre that is unique, enigmatic, and often unsettling, and yet united by a sensitivity of handling and vision that speaks of humanity. For him, the subtext is as relevant as the work itself.

Artist

Born in the East End of London, Betts came from, in his words, a tough background that was as far removed from high art as it is possible to imagine. He ‘drew his way through the national curriculum’ and enrolled at art school where enlightened tutors immediately recognized his extraordinary facility with human anatomy.
