Referred to as French or sometimes Spanish Lavender, Lavandula stoechas ‘Fathead’ is not as robust as the so-called English varieties, but compensates by having the most attractive bracts which flutter like little purple banners high above the aromatic foliage. It is lovely in containers on a sunny terrace and enticing for passing bees and butterflies.

Insights
As early as the 16th century, the renowned herbalist John Gerard referred to the beneficial properties of ‘French Lavender’. From Portugal to Palestine the slightly stronger essential oil obtained from this Lavender has been valued in folk medicine.
Details
From June to August, plump deep purple flowers with purple bracts (which fade to pink as they mature).

Care
Because this plant is half-hardy it needs to be planted in a sunny, sheltered position away from cold winds and protected from frosts. Cut spent flower heads back to encourage further flowering and strong flower stalks.
