notes

Printed onto lightweight, billowy silk in an ikat design (the pattern an ode to a certain wise Star Wars character), the material of this shade has been gathered into folds, adding charming texture and dimension. A classic ‘frustrum’ shape - a cone with the topmost section removed - the Empire Shades are considered one of the more versatile lamp shade shapes.

Insights

According to the V&A, the term ‘ikat’ stems from the Malay word ‘mengikat’, meaning to ‘tie or to bind’. An ancient type of resist dyeing, the ikat method consists of individual yarns being bound with a tight wrapping in the desired pattern, then dyed and unbound before being woven into cloth. For a more complex, multicoloured pattern the binding process may be repeated several times.
