From late spring into summer, the dark, erect stems of Astrantia major Star of Beauty bear pincushion-like umbels of rich magenta flowers surrounded by prominent, grey-tipped, purple bracts with white centres. They work particularly well when planted in drifts with ornamental grasses.

Astrantias are clump-forming herbaceous perennials that have been cultivated in Britain since the 16th century and have numerous common names, such as melancholy gentleman, Hattie's pincushion and the more well known masterwort.

Incorporate plenty of organic matter when planting and water well in dry weather, especially newly established plants. Cut foliage and flowers back as they become untidy in late summer and more foliage will appear. Deadhead before seed is ripe to prevent self-seeding.
