notes

From late spring into summer, the dark, erect stems of Astrantia major Star of Beauty bear pincushion-like umbels of rich magenta flowers surrounded by prominent, grey-tipped, purple bracts with white centres. They work particularly well when planted in drifts with ornamental grasses.

Insights

Astrantias are clump-forming herbaceous perennials that have been cultivated in Britain since the 16th century and have numerous common names, such as melancholy gentleman, Hattie's pincushion and the more well known masterwort.
